Amman- Prominent Jordanian lawyers on Sunday blasted the verdicts passed on ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and his top aides as having been pre-decided by the US-led occupation forces. They told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that they saw "no chance" for the court of appeal to change the rulings, because minimum justice "cannot be guaranteed" for the defendants amidst the present political and security turmoil in Iraq.

"We believe that the verdicts have been prepared beforehand, because what we have watched so far is nothing more than a theatrical play," chairman of the legal committee at the Jordanian lower house of parliament, Ghaleb al-Zoabi, said.

"The minimum guarantees of justice has been absent in this trial, including the rights of lawyers to defend their clients," he added.

Saddam and two of his former top aides were sentenced to death earlier in the day after the Iraqi criminal court condemned them for their role in the murder of 148 Iraqi Shiites in the wake of an abortive attempt on the life of the Iraqi dictator at the village of Dujail.

The ruling allows the defendants to appeal the verdicts within 30 days.

"I am absolutely sure that the court of appeal will not be able to ensure justice to the defendants because all such tribunals are directed by the occupation forces to serve a certain political objective," al-Zoabi said.

This viewpoint was shared by the head of the Amman-based Arab Human Rights Organization, Hani Dahleh, who said: "There is no chance whatsoever for overruling such verdicts by the Iraqi appellate jurisdiction, which is virtually subject to the will of the US troops."

Dahleh said the only window for changing the ruling existed with "world and Arab public opinions, the United Nations and the international legal bodies which can protest these verdicts and create an international campaign in this direction."
