Claims Against Haggard Political?
By Donna Russell

Hypocrites soft soaps their guilty hypocrites.

CBNNews.com - The idea that the charges against evangelical pastor Ted Haggard are politically motived is growing. Members of his congregation say they're standing by their pastor. They told television reporters they don't believe the claims of 49-year-old Mike Jones.

He told a Denver radio station that he had sex almost monthly with Haggard over the past three years. He told the radio audience that he advertised himself as a male escort on the Internet and that's how they allegedly met.

Some of Haggard's supporters say this entire incident is politically motivated because Haggard has been an outspoken supporter of an amendment on Colorado's ballot that would ban same-sex marriage in the state.

Thursday afternoon, Haggard announced he's stepping down from the church and from his position as the President of the National Association of Evangelicals. Haggard says he made the move because he doesn't want to be in the way of the investigation into the matter.

New Life Church members were quick to come to the defense of their pastor.

Brooks DeMio, 44, said Jones has to be lying. He said he finds the claims of Haggard engaging in sex with a man unbelievable.

"He loves the Lord, homosexuality is a sin and that's not Ted," DeMio said. "His desire is to serve other people and uphold the word of God. ... I don't know him well enough to give a complete character description, but I know him enough to know it's not true."

Two other members voiced similar opinions to local television stations.

"I feel horrible. I mean my heart goes out to him and his family to have to have deal with this right now. Because this is just so ridiculous, I can 't believe he would even have to deal with something like this."

"I totally believe in him and what he does, I don't believe that at all. I know that he is a good man."

That what believing does for you...

Believe a lie... be a hypocrite
