Should Pat Robertson Be Stoned For Making False Prophecies?

In Biblical times prophets were sometimes honored, sometimes reviled, but they were respected by the Israelites.

A prophet could really kill a party: “Thou must not dance before golden idols” would not go over very well in a party honoring Baal.

But prophets were perceived as ”messengers of God” and only a fool would dare speak against them. Just ask the children who were torn apart by bears for making fun of the prophet Elisha’s bald pate.

Taking up the mantle of a prophet was never done on a lark. The prophet was purporting to speak for Jehovah and the penalty for a wrong prognostication was death.

“But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death.” — Deut. 18:20.

You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?” If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously.” –Deut. 18:21-22

An Old Testament prophet who made a prophecy that didn’t come to pass couldn’t get away with saying, “My Bad”. Jehovah was infallible and his prophets who were uttering his prophecies could not make a single mistake.

Fast forward to the 21st century and let me introduce you to modern day prophet, Pat Robertson.

From the Associated Press:

"The broadcaster predicted in January 2004 that President Bush would easily win re-election. Bush won 51 percent of the vote that fall, beating Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts. In 2005, Robertson predicted that Bush would have victory after victory in his second term. He said Social Security reform proposals would be approved and Bush would nominate conservative judges to federal courts.

Lawmakers confirmed Bush’s 2005 nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. But the president’s Social Security initiative was stalled."

From the Associated Press:

"Pat Robertson said Tuesday God has told him that a terrorist attack on the United States would result in “mass killing” late in 2007.“I’m not necessarily saying it’s going to be nuclear,” he said during his news-and-talk television show “The 700 Club” on the Christian Broadcasting Network. “The Lord didn’t say nuclear. But I do believe it will be something like that.”

Pat Robertson is a failure as a prophet, not all of his predictions come to pass. Pat Robertson is always preaching that we must be faithful to the teachings of the Bible. He often quotes Old Testament verses that condemn homosexuals to death.

Jehovah doesn’t pussyfoot around, he expects his prophets never to be wrong in their predictions. And as we have seen the penalty for a wrong prediction is death. Shouldn’t Pat Robertson be stoned to death for uttering false prophecies?

Pat Robertson was quick to call for the execution of the great leader Hugo Chavez; he doesn’t deserve any mercy from his fellow born-againers.

I’m not really serious about Pat Robertson being put to death, but at the very least he should shut the hell up.
