False prophet

ONE has to wonder if God lets out a groan every time religious broadcaster Pat Robertson goes public with yet another “special revelation” he supposedly received from the Almighty. That’s because when God and Mr. Robertson get together, the conversation always turns to the morbidly apocalyptic.
On The 700 Club last week, Mr. Robertson revealed that God told him that “evil men” were plotting against the United States and that their scheme would result in “mass killing” later this year.
“The Lord didn’t say nuclear,” Mr. Robertson added, trying to cushion the blow, “but I do believe it will be something like that.” For reasons known only to God and Mr. Robertson, the Almighty couldn’t be more specific. As usual, the devil is in the details.
Fortunately, when it comes to prophecy, Mr. Robertson is no Nostradamus. He incorrectly predicted a Soviet invasion of Israel in 1980, a worldwide depression in 1981, a killer tsunami affecting America last year, and a “successful” second term for President Bush that would include Social Security reform passed by a Republican Congress.
Mr. Robertson is what they used to call in the Old Testament a false prophet. Perhaps he should stick to what he knows best — calling for the assassination of world leaders he doesn’t like.
Admittedly, it isn’t very Christian, but neither is shouting “the sky is falling” in God’s name.
