PHOENIX – University of Arizona researchers have found evidence of a medieval drought along the Colorado River.

The 60-year drought in the 12th century was more persistent than any on record.

And it suggests a similar megadrought could strike again with devastating consequences.
The researchers say a recurrence of those medieval conditions would put a lot of strain on the reservoirs that store water from the Colorado.

For example – in the 1100s – the Colorado flowed an average of 15 percent below what is now considered normal for 25 years.

Recently, a streak of just five consecutive below-normal years emptied Lake Powell and Lake Mead of more than half of their supply.

The study provides the longest record of the Colorado River's historic flows. It could help other scientists predict the effects of climate change.
