The US government made a surprising announcement on Thursday: it is acting in good faith in the case of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles.

That definition of Washington"s actions, which will not ease the already visible indignation of the Cuban people and the protests taking place all over the world, was given by Tom Shannon, the US top diplomat for Latin America.

"We are acting in good faith, recognizing our laws and obligations under international laws," Shannon said in Washington.

That statement contradicts the events involving Posada Carriles, which concluded when he was released, although he had repeatedly told reporters about his participation in many terrorist actions.

The United States is faced with Venezuela"s extradition request for Posada Carriles, who escaped from a Caracas prison, where he was doing time for organizing and greenlighting the sabotage of a Cuban civilian airplane in 1976, killing all 73 people on board, in addition to being a repressor in that South American country.

In addition, the terrorists he hired to carry out sabotages in Cuban tourist facilities, in one of which an Italian vacationer was killed, confessed their crimes and accused Posada Carriles of organizing those actions.

The Nicaraguan government and Salvadorian organizations have presented evidence of Posada Carriles" participation in the Iran-Contras operation to arm Central American counterrevolutionaries, and a Panamanian court sentenced him for plotting to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro.

On many occasions, Posada Carriles entered US territory illegally as part of his violent operations, as US prosecutors admitted.

However, all those crimes seemed to vanish when the defendant threatened to reveal the secrets he keeps from the time he was a CIA operative.

Considering all this, it is hard for Cubans and international public opinion to believe in the White House"s alleged good faith, as claimed by Mr. Shannon.
