Boston University scientists discover the underground remnants of an ancient lake they hope may help efforts to restore peace in Sudan's arid Darfur region.
The vast region is suffering from a devastating civil war that stoked conflicts caused by decades of scarce water and other resources.
Scientists hope to drill at least 1,000 wells in the region and pump the precious water to ease tensions among communities living there.
The 4-year conflict has killed more than 200,000 people, displaced more than 2.5 million others and sparked a regional humanitarian crisis.
The director of the Boston University Center for Remote Sensing, Farouk El-Baz, led the effort that discovered the massive lake in northern Darfur using radar data from space.
He says water pumped from the underground reservoir that measures as large as Massachusetts could help spark economic growth in Darfur.
