Young Republican National Federation Chair Accused of Sexually Assaulting Sleeping Man

Glenn Murphy, Jr., the recently elected chairman of the Young Republican National Federation (also the RNC Chair for Clark County, Indiana and formerly the YRNF Secretary) has been accused of sexually assaulting a sleeping man. Immediately following the accusation, he came up with an unrelated reason to resign, and the YRNF cleansed their website of his name.


Allegedly, Murphy and another YR were drunk and crashing at Murphy's sister's house. The other man apparently awoke in the morning to find Murphy giving him a non-consensual blow job. The Clark County (Indiana) Sheriff's Department is charging Murphy with "criminal deviate conduct", a Class B felony.

Taking Down Words, an Indiana blog, has been following this guy for some time. And guess what? Apparently this isn't the first time his mouth has ended up on someone's privates while they were asleep. Glenn Murphy has a prior arrest for sexual battery. As the details of the serious allegations against Mr. Murphy become more clear, so does the fact that this story is not likely to go away any time soon. This morning brings us the first few print articles on the matter, a number which I would expect to grow before the end of the day.
From Larry Thomas of the Jeffersonville Evening News, we got this story last night:

On Tuesday, Glenn Murphy Jr. e-mailed media a letter announcing his resignation from both positions, citing an unexpected business opportunity that would prohibit him from holding a partisan political office.
However, on Friday the Clark County Sheriff's Department began investigating Murphy for alleged criminal deviate conduct - potentially a class B felony - after speaking with a 22-year-old man who claims that on July 31, Murphy performed an unwanted sex act on him while the man slept in a relative's Jeffersonville home.

And from Ben Zion Hershberg of the Louisville Courier-Journal, another update:
Wilder said Murphy's resignation announcement from the GOP positions was unrelated to the blog posting. He said Murphy had been pursuing a major client for his advertising agency for months and recently won the contract, but the client won't allow Murphy to engage in partisan politics.
Murphy, who lives in Utica, said earlier this summer when he was elected chairman of the Young Republicans national group that he would soon step down as county Republican chairman.

I have no doubt that his resignation had nothing to do with the blog posting. I am pretty certain, though, that it may have had a lot to do with that little thing they call a criminal investigation. Maybe I am wrong, in which case this is one coincidental miracle we have on our hands here.

Mr. Murphy wasn't exactly honest about the reasons for his rapid departure from the Young Republicans leadership:
To my dearest friends in Florida,
It's been an absolutely crazy weekend for me, and I just wanted to take a few minutes and share with you some of the decisions I've had to make in a very short amount of time. Some you may have heard, some not.

I wanted to address the Floridians specifically because of the close friendships I have developed with so many of you.

First the great news. I bid on a contract for my company a little more than a year ago. I didn't think it was going to go anywhere. It was a huge project, and taking on the commitment would be life altering for me and my business - my company doing in one year what I would ordinarily do in five. I never thought in a million years that I would land this bid. Well, I landed the bid Friday. Yay for me, right?

There was a major catch.

Due to the nature of the client, one of the stipulations in the contract was that I hold no official partisan titles. (insert gut-wrenching dilemma here) I could help. I could maintain the political consulting division of my business as long as I had additional lead consultants. But I could hold no official Republican positions.

My family sat down with me Saturday evening to look at things from every angle. We're very close. My mom was pretty blunt about what I needed to do. If I didn't take the job, there could potentially never be that type of opportunity again and I would be shorting the security of my future and the future of my family. I took mom's advice to heart.

It seems that the recently elected leader of the Young Republican National Federation, Indiana's own Glenn Murphy, has been forced to step down amid allegations that he has committed a Class B felony, officially categorized as "criminal deviate conduct."
Criminal deviate conduct is described in the Indiana Code as such:

Sec. 2. (a) A person who knowingly or intentionally causes another person to perform or submit to deviate sexual conduct when:
(1) the other person is compelled by force or imminent threat of force;
(2) the other person is unaware that the conduct is occurring; or
(3) the other person is so mentally disabled or deficient that consent to the conduct cannot be given;
commits criminal deviate conduct, a Class B felony.
To make a long, graphic story short, the police report indicates that Mr. Murphy is accused of undertaking sexual acts upon an unwilling, intoxicated acquaintance.
