Texas pastor arrested in Montana on child sex charges

He allegedly faked his death in February and fled to Montana

A former youth pastor accused of sexually assaulting a child in Texas was tracked down Tuesday, six months after he allegedly faked his death.

Kevin Othell Laferney, 40, is wanted in Upshur County, Texas, on four counts each of aggravated sexual assault of a child and bail jumping.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, he faked his death in February and disappeared before he was scheduled to appear in court.

Great Falls police and U.S. Marshals deputies arrested Laferney, who was living in the area, without incident at about 5 p.m. Tuesday when authorities knocked on the door of his apartment.

"We got lucky and he answered," said Dana Rossmiller, a supervisory deputy U.S. Marshal based in Great Falls.

Laferney had been working as a painter and living in an apartment complex near a city park, Rossmiller said.

The U.S. Marshals Service Violent Offenders and Fugitive Task Force was alerted that Laferney might be in Great Falls by the Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force.

Laferney is originally from Texas, Rossmiller said, who added that he didn't know what brought the man to Great Falls.

Rossmiller had no details of the alleged scheme, and the Upshur County sheriff's office declined to comment Tuesday evening. Texas media accounts of the sexual assault charges, which were filed in August 2006, said Laferney is a former youth minister at a church in the Gilmer area, about 100 miles east of Dallas.

He was being held in the Cascade County regional jail pending an appearance before a federal magistrate. Laferney likely will be extradited, Rossmiller said.

Police say fugitive faked death with blood-stained truck

A fugitive arrested here Tuesday faked his death in Texas by leaving his vehicle stained with blood at a park, a detective said Wednesday.

Kevin Othell Laferney, a former youth pastor, is accused of sexually assaulting a child in Upshur County, Texas, last summer. He faked his death in February and disappeared before he was scheduled to appear in court, authorities said.

Laferney, 40, was arrested Tuesday at a Great Falls apartment. He faces four counts each of aggravated sexual assault of a child and bail jumping.

Lt. David Dickerson, head of investigation at the Upshur County sheriff's office, said Laferney tried to fake his death at a roadside park north of Big Sandy, Texas. Laferney left blood on a baseball cap and throughout his pickup truck, Dickerson said.

"He tried to make it look like foul play," he said. "Of course, we didn't buy that."

The Upshur County sheriff's office began an investigation but soon called in the U.S. Marshals. "We ran down leads to Alabama, Mexico, Mississippi," Dickerson said.

The U.S. Marshals contacted Great Falls police on Tuesday, and officers staked out Laferney's apartment, said Detective Art Schalin of the Great Falls Police Department.

Laferney was arrested without incident; he confirmed who he was but otherwise "hardly spoke at all," Schalin said.

Laferney had been living in Great Falls for four or five months but had no friends or relatives in the area.

"There's no reason why he came up here," Schalin said.

Laferney was living in Great Falls under an alias and had a female roommate who didn't know he was facing charges in Texas. The woman was the mother of one of Laferney's co-workers at a painting business in Black Eagle.

"She had absolutely no clue," Schalin said.

Minister Awaiting Extradition

A follow-up this morning, while a former East Texas youth minister is awaiting extradition on sexual assault charges, his father is behind bars. Upshur county authorities arrested 80 year old Othell LaFerney. He's charged with filing a false report to police. His son, 40 year old Kevin Laferney was arrested Tuesday by U-S Marshals in Montana. Authorities say he disappeared before a court hearing this past April on the sexual assault charges, even going so far as to fake his own death. Kevin Laferney is awaiting a magistrate hearing in Montana to determine when he will be sent back to East Texas.

Fugitive Who Staged Own Death Captured

By CASEY KNAUPP
Staff Writer

A Gilmer man who staged his own death and was wanted by state and federal authorities for sexually assaulting a child was captured in Montana Tuesday night, a few weeks before his case was scheduled to air on “America’s Most Wanted” TV show.

Kevin Othell Laferney, 40, was arrested in Great Falls, Mont., by deputy U.S. marshals and the Great Falls Police Department.

The investigation began Feb. 14, when Laferney staged his death in his vehicle at a rest area on Texas Highway 155, between Big Sandy and Gilmer, said Tyler-based Deputy U.S. Marshal Corey Britt in a press release Wednesday.

Laferney was arrested Aug. 14, 2006, on state charges, including two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child. He was released from the Upshur County Jail Nov. 27, 2006 on bonds totaling $475,000.

He was also wanted by deputy marshals for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Laferney’s case was scheduled to air on “America’s Most Wanted” in a few weeks, Britt said.

An investigation by Tyler marshals and the Upshur County Sheriff deputies discovered Laferney living in an apartment and working at a paint store in Great Falls under the name Chance Chambers. He was arrested at his home there without incident and authorities seized two laptop computers as possible evidence, Britt said.

Laferney was booked into the Cascade County Jail in Montana and awaits extradition to Upshur County.
