Tehran, Iran (AHN) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sent congratulatory sentiments to Pope Benedict XVI, on the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The greetings were sent Wednesday.
The greetings were also sent out to all nations celebrating the Christmas holiday. Ahmadinejad sent out his felicitations for the new Christian year.
In the message Ahmadinejad openly expressed his hope for the eradication of cruelty and aggression, upon the start of the New Year.
Ahmadinejad stated, "I hope 2008 will be the year of peace and friendship, and that people's rights will be more respected and morality will be promoted in societies throughout the world," as quoted by the Tehran Times.
The Iranian president furthered by acknowledging the similarity of religions in the worship of a God, as well as "defend the oppressed and promote moral values."
"Let us all play a role in establishing justice and love in the world," he said.
The Islamic Republic News Agency added that Ahmadinejad expressed that he hoped for the world to benefit from the teachings of kindness and peace, tranquility and stability, as taught by Jesus Christ.
