Catholic Church and Pedophile case
In an unprecedented move, a Catholic Church in Switzerland has admitted to being aware of the alleged pedophile activities of a priest.
The Church added that it hadn't reported the priest to the authorities, EuroNews' website reported.
The cleric in question is suspected to have abused children in several communities in France and Switzerland over the past 40 years. He has already been interviewed by the French police.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Church in a western region of Switzerland said that they were opening their own investigation into the matter. They are appealing for information about the priest's alleged crimes.
This is while prosecutors in France have asked their Swiss counterparts to interview the man, who cannot be named due to legal reasons.
The case was unfolded when the priest told a newspaper in Lyon that he had committed abuse in France.
The confession prompted the Swiss Catholic hierarchy into action.
At the moment, the priest is staying at a convent in Switzerland. However, his superiors have urged him to turn himself over to the civil authorities.
