Ancient City Of Aizanoi: World's First Stock Exchange

History Anomalies

The ancient city of Aizanoi in Cavdarhisar town of the western Turkish city of Kutahya has been considered one of the most important historical sites.
In an exclusive interview with the A.A, Ismail Tanriverdi, sub-governor of the town, said on Tuesday, "the ancient city, 57 kilometres from Kutahya`s city center, has a temple built for Zeus which is the best-preserved temple in all Anatolia. There is also a large theater and a stadium adjacent to theater. There are two Turkish-style baths, one of them decorated with mosaics, a gymnasium, five bridges on Kocacay River which are still used today, an old dam, a trading building, avenues with columns on both sides, necropolis (cemetery) areas and the sacred cave of the goddess Meter Steunene. The German Institute is still carrying out excavations in the city."

"The city Aizanoi might have taken its name from the mythological hero Azan. Aizanoi was the main settlement of the Aizanitisians, who lived under the rule of the ancient Phrygians. Recent excavations around the Temple of Zeus revealed several levels of settlements dating from as far back as 3000 B.C. In 133 B.C. the city entered the dominion of the Roman Empire. Aizanoi printed its first coins in the second and first centuries. During the days of the Roman Empire, the town became rich from its production of grains, wine and wool. It was the center of the episcopacy in the early Byzantine period but it lost its influence in the 7th century. The German Archaeology Institute has been excavating the site since 1970," he said.

Tanriverdi said that the world`s first stock exchange alto took place in Aizanoi.

"There was a round building (Macellum) which was used as food market in the second part of the second century A.D. This area was excavated in 1971 and on its partly repaired walls was hung a copy of the price lists of the Emperor Diocletian which he prepared so as to bring down inflation. For example, a physically strong slave would be the same price as two donkeys and one horse was worth three slaves," he said.

Tanriverdi added, "We want to introduce this ancient city as one of the most important tourist attractions in Turkey. Turkish Travel Agencies` Association has begun construction a hotel in the town. Once the hotel is completed, we expect many tourists to visit the ancient city."
