Ex-priest sentenced for 1960's sexual assaults in Beaver Dam

(EX-priest sentenced -- Active Priest Raped Children!)

By Diane Graff
A 86-year-old former Catholic priest was convicted in Dodge County Circuit Court Friday of sexually assaulting girls who were patients at Beaver Dam hospital four decades ago.

Bruce Duncan MacArthur of Robertsville, Mo., pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual intercourse with a child, two counts of indecent behavior with a child, one count of attempted indecent behavior with a child and he entered an Alford plea on an additional charge of indecent behavior with a child before Judge Brian Pfitzinger.

The offenses occurred back in the mid-1960s with three different girls all under the age of 18 at the time.

Pfitzinger stayed a 75-year prison sentence and honored the request of a victim in which MacArthur must meet with her at least 10 times for two hours to discuss the assaults. The victim is now 53 years old and testified at the hearing.

MacArthur was also sentenced to six months in jail and was placed on 10 years probation. He was also ordered to serve an additional 30 days in jail for each of the next six years

Earlier this year, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled the case could be prosecuted in Dodge County. MacArthur argued he could not be prosecuted because the statute of limitations had expired.

The Supreme Court agreed with the state that the case could move forward because MacArthur moved out of the state before the statute of limitations had expired.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, there was a statute of limitations that was six years, but there was a provision that the six-year time period is put on hold when a defendant leaves the state.

According to the charges, the incidents occurred while MacArthur worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Beaver Dam as a chaplain between April 12, 1966, and Jan. 12, 1970. He left the state after the assignment and never returned.

According to the complaint, one of the victims, now over the age of 60, reported the sexual abuse to a Beaver Dam police detective in November of 2005. She told investigators the abuse began when she was 10 years old.

In a statement to police, the victim wrote the chaplain developed a relationship with her parents and became good friends. Her parents would allow the defendant to take her to church and after Mass he took her to his apartment at the hospital where he fondled her. Within a few weeks, the fondling progressed into sexual intercourse, the victim, who was 11 years old at the time, stated. Late in 2005, another victim spoke with investigators about incidents that occurred between Aug. 15, 1966, and June 15, 1967, also at the hospital.

A week later, another victim came forward and told investigators about sexual abuse while a patient at St. Joseph's Hospital.

MacArthur faced up to 80 years in prison for the offenses.
