Mene, mene, tekel, peres

In front of a crowd of over 100,000 people, Democratic candidate for president Barack Obama attempted to unify the country behind the final nine days of his campaign for president.

“There are no real or fake parts of this country,” Obama told supporters at Civic Center Park on Sunday. “We are not separated by pro-America and anti-America parts of this country. We have always been at our best when we’ve had leadership that called us to look past our differences and come together as one nation.”

Obama also reiterated that in the spectre of challenges — economic and military, Americans would need to unite across party lines.

“We are the United States of America. We are a nation that’s faced down war and depression — great challenges and great threats. And at each and every moment, we have risen to meet these challenges — not as Democrats, not as Republicans, but as Americans.”

The event, which gathered Obama supporters from the steps of the Downtown Denver courthouse all the way to the steps of the Capitol building, was the largest gathering of Obama supporters since the Democratic National Convention in August.

“Do you ever have small crowds in Denver?” Obama asked his supporters.

Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the crowd Sunday spilled out of the park to the State Capitol and onto surrounding streets during Obama’s visit. Original estimates by the Secret Service pegged the crowd closer to 65,000 to 70,000, however Jackson said over 100,000 assembled in Downtown Denver.

Obama also reiterated his desire to place a 90-day moratorium on foreclosures if elected, a plan he unveiled two weeks ago at a campaign appearance in Toledo, Ohio.

“I’ll help responsible homeowners refinance their mortgages on affordable terms, and put in place a three-month moratorium on foreclosures to give folks the breathing room they need to get back on their feet.” Obama said in Denver.

Obama also thanked the crowd for their well-wishes after taking a day off of the campaign last week to be with his sick grandmother.

“So many of you wrote letters and sent flowers ... I just wanted everyone to know how much it meant to her and how much it meant to me.” Obama said.

The gathering marked the third consecutive day that high-profile Democrats have campaigned hard in Colorado, traditionally a swing state.

Hillary Clinton appeared at the former Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Aurora on Friday. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson made an appearance at a rally in Aurora while campaigning throughout the state on Saturday.
