Will Obama End Freedom of Speech as we Know it?
Or, the Dallas Morning News Calls Fox, et al., Liars

Stuart Varney was the substitute host today (October 31, 2008) on Fox's "premiere business news" show, Your World w/Neil Cavuto. In one of the segments in what has morphed into an hour-long Obama smear-feast, Varney implied that the Obama campaign kicked reporters from three newspapers off its campaign plane because their editorial boards endorsed McCain. (I haven't heard a word on this show about the reporters McCain has kicked off his plane - here and here.) Unfortunately for Fox, the interview didn't go quite as planned.

Updated.

Varney introduced his guest, Wayne Slater of the Dallas Morning News with this: "Kicked off the Obama plane. Reporters from three newspapers are getting the boot just days before Election Day by the Obama campaign. Those papers are the New York Post, the Washington Times and the Dallas Morning News. The Obama campaign says it simply doesn't have enough room on the plane to meet demand. But, considering all three papers have endorsed McCain, is something more sinister going on here? Reaction now from Wayne Slater of the Dallas Morning News who was just given the boot from the plane."

After several seconds of opening banter Varney asked, "You think flat out you were kicked off the plane because your newspaper endorsed the opposition?" (Don't you love that? The "opposition?")

Slater: "Stuart, I have no evidence of that. We were not told that. We don't believe that. We know that we did endorse John McCain. Ah, in fact, I think it's entirely possible that there simply wasn't enough room. ... I really don't think this was a function of the endorsement. I think this was a function of their decision to have a mix in the final days of this campaign which worked more to their advantage - more network people, more outreach, ah, possibly some other folks."

Oops. Though this short segment didn't go as planned, Fox managed to push a lot of buttons: They'll repeal the Fairness Doctrine; the First Amendment restricts the freedom of speech of kings and queens (wah, wah); will Obama govern like a Socialist Commie dictator?; he hates America, and freedom of speech is out the window. When you don't report the sleaze that the Republicans are doing and have done, you can get away with dumping on "the opposition" like this.

McCain Kicks Joe Klein Off the Plane
By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday October 21, 2008

First Maureen Dowd, now it's DFH Joe Klein:

Time columnist Joe Klein, who’s been a forceful critic of the McCain campaign (and already said he’s unwilling to accept a post-election apology), has found himself without a seat on the McCain or Palin planes the past four months.

In June, Klein was kept from boarding the McCain plane over what they said had been a security issue. More recently, when trying to fly on the Palin plane last week, Klein told Politico over e-mail that the campaign's response was he “couldn’t be accommodated at this time.”

“I’ve done nine presidential campaigns and this is the first time this has ever happened to me,” Klein said. “I was even allowed—I won’t say welcomed—on the Clinton plane in the summer of 1996 after I was revealed as the author of Primary Colors.”

“I rode with McCain during the primaries, but not since I asked him—at a June press conference—whether he really believed Ahmadinejad was the ‘leader’ of Iran, since he has no control over foreign policy or the nuclear program,” Klein continued. “That was when they suddenly told me that I hadn’t called in time to get secret service clearance. (I had called more than a day in advance.)"

One of the most destructive habits of the Bush administration was denying access to any of its critics, which turned the media into a bunch of "access whores" who just shoveled spin and didn't offer much in the way of meaningful criticism for fear they wouldn't get the headlines.

The fact that McCain is already showing these tendencies and blowing off big time reporters would be more troubling if he weren't sinking like a rock in the polls. As it is, it's just another symptom of his nasty temper, his sense of entitlement and his proclivity for cribbing his campaign cues from Bush.

Maureen Dowd Reacts To Being Tossed From McCain Plane

Earlier this week, we learned that the McCain campaign had barred New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd from traveling on their plane, stranding her at an airport hotel in Pittsburgh as McCain's pool of reporters wended their way on without her ready skill at alliteration and musical theatre references. Since then, Dowd has had the opportunity to respond:

"I had had a great relationship with John McCain for 16 years, through columns he liked and didn't like. So at first I thought it was a mistake and doublechecked with the press office. They said I was banned from both planes for 'the foreseeable future.' Then [McCain spokeswoman] Nicolle Wallace was gloating about it to reporters on the Palin plane," Dowd wrote in an email.

"It was disappointing because I didn't think John McCain would ever be as dismissive of the First Amendment as Dick Cheney."

Actually, I'd say McCain is being far more "dismissive" than Cheney. After all, nothing gave Adam Clymer as much cachet as being known as the press corps' "Major League Asshole of 2000." That's BIG TIME.
