Mark Hourigan Was Charged With Abusing Boy
A Louisville church plans to ordain a registered sex offender as a minister this weekend.
The ordination of Mark Hourigan is scheduled to take place at the City of Refuge Worship Center in Germantown on Sunday morning.
Hourigan was charged with sexually abusing and sodomizing an 11-year-old boy in 1998.
He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was released from prison in 2006.
"No way shape or form does the City of Refuge Worship Center or I as a pastor, condone what Hourigan did 10 years ago. But this man has proven himself and paid his debt to society," said the Rev. Randy Meadows.
"It's very well known with the best psychiatrists out there there is no cure for sex offenders. This man sodomized an 11-year-old child. We don't need him in our neighborhood," said Richard Lauersdorf, a concerned resident.
The church has about 35 members who have about 10 children.
Members of an abuse victim's group have asked the church to reconsider the ordination.
