Right-Wing Rage: Hate Groups, Vigilantes and Conspiracists on the Verge of Violence

By Mark Potok

The radical right has caught fire, as broad-based anger over the past year has ignited an explosion of new extremist groups and activism across the nation.

(Our comments in Parenthesis)

The radical right caught fire last year, as broad-based populist anger at political, demographic and economic changes in America ignited an explosion of new extremist groups and activism across the nation.

Hate groups stayed at record levels -- almost 1,000 -- despite the total collapse of the second largest neo-Nazi group in America. Furious anti-immigrant vigilante groups soared by nearly 80 percent, adding some 136 new groups during 2009. And, most remarkably of all, so-called "Patriot" groups -- militias and other organizations that see the federal government as part of a plot to impose “one-world government” on liberty-loving Americans -- came roaring back after years out of the limelight.

(Roaring back? How can this be when preachers preach this message Sunday after Sunday? One World Order-Mark of the Beast, Apocalypse, etc.? They preach against One World Order while Praying that Jesus come back soon to establish a One World Order to be ruled by Jesus' own rod of iron. Roaring back? No its been there all along in every Christian outhouse, orifice, and building)

The anger seething across the American political landscape -- over racial changes in the population, soaring public debt and the terrible economy, the bailouts of bankers and other elites, and an array of initiatives by the relatively liberal Obama Administration that are seen as "socialist" or even "fascist" -- goes beyond the radical right. The "tea parties" and similar groups that have sprung up in recent months cannot fairly be considered extremist groups, but they are shot through with rich veins of radical ideas, conspiracy theories and racism.

(No change at all from our point of view. Bush was seen as a socialist, communist, fascist with his over-reaching torture, war on terrorism, Patriot Acts, bailout for banksters, etc. The MOST ignorant, moronic, illiterate, and stupid of the Christian Conservative Republicans have united under their Illiterate Glen Beck tea bagging banner)

“We are in the midst of one of the most significant right-wing populist rebellions in United States history,” Chip Berlet, a veteran analyst of the American radical right, wrote earlier this year. "We see around us a series of overlapping social and political movements populated by people [who are] angry, resentful, and full of anxiety. They are raging against the machinery of the federal bureaucracy and liberal government programs and policies including health care, reform of immigration and labor laws, abortion, and gay marriage."

(Dost thou forget the Religious Right Republican fools under Abraham Lincoln that too used a 'higher law' to violate peoples rights, states' rights, produce illegal wars, torture, creating illegal 'states', and installed a empirical dictatorial, tyrannical Republican Radical Rump congress. For 40 years that corrupt congress of Republicans held power over the people and the states, ending the constitutional republic once known as the confederation of states, called the United States. The Republican party has always pandered to the corporate business interests and the worst of the worst individuals in America,-- the Christians, the illiterate, the ignorant, the stupid, the racists, the war-mongers... 1861 was never about Slavery but Republican theft of the Constitutional Republic. Emancipation was a war propaganda tactic... Not because Republicans were not racists.. they were the worst and the KKK came from their ranks and were endorsed by the Republican Party. They wanted FREED SLAVES in the SOUTH... they did not want those Freed Slaves coming North! Immigration FEAR!)

Sixty-one percent of Americans believe the country is in decline, according to a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. Just a quarter think the government can be trusted. And the anti-tax tea party movement is viewed in much more positive terms than either the Democratic or Republican parties, the poll found.

(Wake up! This country is in decline! Katrina is one example, the economy for another, infrastructure crumbling, social security funds missing, mishandled, and stolen by Congress for its stupid wars, no real money just paper trash, making the US in worse shape than Weimer Germany. The people in this country left and right are sick and tired of government interference in their lives, starting with a homeowners associations (racketeers) operating under government protection to the cities, school districts, states, and federal government. They are sick and tired of the government giving corporations rule over the people and thier property even to the point of having the corporate power to CRUSH a goverment, even that of the USA. The left and the right are tired of malfeasants, liars and hypocrites getting to the highest offices in government by election, appointment and hiring. The people are really getting sick of the IRS and their insane, unjust, and illegal tactics. The people are tired of being taxed just to waste that money on private business corporations, tired of being taxed to give away money to foreign governments on the US welfare dole, such as Israel and about 170 more nations. The people for the most part are not isolationist, but don't feel their money via taxes should pay for everything throughout the world. Its a failed policy, making the US hypocritical at every turn)

The signs of growing radicalization are everywhere. Armed men have come to Obama speeches bearing signs suggesting that the "tree of liberty" needs to be "watered" with "the blood of tyrants." The Conservative Political Action Conference held this February was co-sponsored by groups like the John Birch Society, which believes President Eisenhower was a Communist agent, and Oath Keepers, a Patriot outfit formed last year that suggests, in thinly veiled language, that the government has secret plans to declare martial law and intern patriotic Americans in concentration camps. Politicians pandering to the anti-government right in 37 states have introduced "Tenth Amendment Resolutions," based on the constitutional provision keeping all powers not explicitly given to the federal government with the states. And, at the Web site titled "A Well Regulated Militia," a recent discussion of how to build "clandestine safe houses" to stay clear of the federal government included a conversation about how mass murderers like Timothy McVeigh and Olympics bomber Eric Rudolph were supposedly betrayed at such houses.

(Here the author is blaming the right for all this, but I am a liberal, a proud to be liberal, and many of us lefties are concerned over the same issues. NAFTA is but one minor example of the conspiracy, intended or otherwise played out against the American people, but in favor of American corporations, and against the people of the other trading nation. It is a win-win for corporations, but a loss for all the people)

Doing the Numbers
The number of hate groups in America has been going up for years, rising 54 percent between 2000 and 2008 and driven largely by an angry backlash against non-white immigration and, starting in the last year of that period, the economic meltdown and the climb to power of an African American president.

(Between 2000 and 2008... now that would be 2001-2007 inclusive.. those were Bush-Republican years. So many of the 'concerned' citizen groups would have to be from the liberal left. It is the POLITICIANS that make immigration an issue! They do it every election cycle. As a liberal I see we need a comprehensive, more stringent immigration policy, and one that is more fair.. not favored to certain nations.)

According to the latest annual count by the Southern Poverty Law Center), these groups rose again slightly in 2009 -- from 926 in 2008 to 932 last year -- despite the demise of a key neo-Nazi group. The American National Socialist Workers Party, which had 35 chapters in 28 states, imploded shortly after the October 2008 arrest of founder Bill White for making threats against his enemies.

(The numbers tend to show that it would be the left that was more concerned with losses of liberties, than were the righties...The Liberal Left is at least equally concerned over government intrusions into areas of our lives that it has no right to trespass.)

At the same time, the number of what the SPLC designates as "nativist extremist" groups -- organizations that go beyond mere advocacy of restrictive immigration policy to actually confront or harass suspected immigrants -- jumped from 173 groups in 2008 to 309 last year. Virtually all of these vigilante groups have appeared since the spring of 2005.

But the most dramatic story by far has been with the anti-government Patriots.

The militias and the larger Patriot movement first came to Americans’ attention in the mid-1990s, when they appeared as an angry reaction to what was seen as a tyrannical government bent on crushing all dissent. Sparked most dramatically by the death of 76 Branch Davidians during a 1993 law enforcement siege in Waco, Texas, those who joined the militias also railed against the Democratic Clinton Administration and initiatives like gun control and environmental regulation. Although the Patriot movement included people formerly associated with racially based hate groups, it was above all animated by a view of the federal government as the primary enemy, along with a fondness for anti-government conspiracy theories. By early this decade, the groups had largely disappeared from public view.

(Here the author sucumbs to lies by omission --- The USA government under Clinton Democrat attacked, without lawful warrant (that's not a law enforcement act) the Branch Davidians on Sunday morning during their church services. The Feds were not legally in their jurisdiction, having failed to notice the Sheriff of the county of their impending action, and would have to show him the warrant that did not exist. The Feds murderd all men, women, and children by fire. Innocent children that had nothing to do with anything the Feds were accusing the church of were murdered without conscience by the Feds. Evidence was hidden during the court trials by the Feds. The alleged broken law was about 'hellfire' triggers, which like BUSH's WMD, never existed. It was left and right, BOTH, that were furious over this government war operation against peaceful citizens.)

But last year, as noted in the SPLC’s August report, "The Second Wave: Return of the Militias," a dramatic resurgence in the Patriot movement and its paramilitary wing, the militias, began. Now, the latest SPLC count finds that an astonishing 363 new Patriot groups appeared in 2009, with the totals going from 149 groups (including 42 militias) to 512 (127 of them militias) — a 244 percent jump.

(We read the author's ranting, but not once has there been an allegation of an illegal act, so far. Do the people, right or left, not have the right to assemble? Do they not have the right of free speech? The right to associate, the right to bear arms, to free press, to right of religion? No matter how insane the reasoning is or how stupid their religion is? What's the problem if they are simply enjoying what few rights that Bush, now Obama has left us?)

That is cause for grave concern. Individuals associated with the Patriot movement during its 1990s heyday produced an enormous amount of violence, most dramatically the Oklahoma City bombing that left 168 people dead.

(Was it not Bush himself that re-created the Patriot movement, hell he even called for this movement of American patriotism! Myself, I'm not proud of the USA, so I can't salute a soiled by blood flag. What about the million plus dead in the Middle East from the Patriot movement that Bush revived and used to attack an innocent people? The USA trained these Patriots to be stealth killers of every design and technology, and these trained by US military Patriots are coming home to roost. Coming home to an economy destroyed by the STUPID Republicans in power under BUSH. You're getting what YOU paid for! Trained killer Patriots.)

Already there are signs of similar violence emanating from the radical right. Since the installation of Barack Obama, right-wing extremists have murdered six law enforcement officers. Racist skinheads and others have been arrested in alleged plots to assassinate the nation’s first black president. One man from Brockton, Mass. — who told police he had learned on white supremacist websites that a genocide was under way against whites — is charged with murdering two black people and planning to kill as many Jews as possible on the day after Obama’s inauguration. Most recently, a rash of individuals with antigovernment, survivalist or racist views have been arrested in a series of bomb cases.

(The violence is due to the pot boiling over. The people, left and right, are mad as hell -- and might not take it anymore. They are sick of bankster bailouts, sick of government intrusion, sick of tax dollars going to foreign countries when our own is falling apart, sick of tax dollars going to bailout foreign banksters and governments, but can't find the money to bail out its own states, sick of de-regulation of the huge corporations for the sake of profit and greed, but stringent regulations enforced against private and small businesses. Sick of the criminals getting away with corporate rape, literally and figuratively. Sick of losing their homes and livlihoods being detroyed by incompetent governments and mega corporations and transnationals, and through absolutely no fault of their own. Sick of the media putting roses on a turd and calling this depression a recession)

As the movement has exploded, so has the reach of its ideas, aided and abetted by commentators and politicians in the ostensible mainstream. While in the 1990s, the movement got good reviews from a few lawmakers and talk-radio hosts, some of its central ideas today are being plugged by people with far larger audiences like FOX News’ Glenn Beck and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn. Beck, for instance, re-popularized a key Patriot conspiracy theory -- the charge that FEMA is secretly running concentration camps -- before finally “debunking” it.

(I agree with the author 100%.. FOX news is dangerous.. It's propangda.. It's mind control.. It's a tool of the Republican Party -- It parades all Republican illiterates, indicted, convicted, whoremongers, disgraced, removed from office, and the LOSERS at the elections as 'authorities', as important people, -- when they are seldom little more than Criminals)

Last year also experienced levels of cross-pollination between different sectors of the radical right not seen in years. Nativist activists increasingly adopted the ideas of the Patriots; racist rants against Obama and others coursed through the Patriot movement; and conspiracy theories involving the government appeared in all kinds of right-wing venues. A good example is the upcoming Second Amendment March in Washington, D.C. The Web site promoting the march is topped by a picture of a colonial militiaman, and key supporters include Larry Pratt, a long-time militia enthusiast with connections to white supremacists, and Richard Mack, a conspiracy-mongering former sheriff associated with the Patriot group, Oath Keepers.

(While the above statement is really truthful, it fails to acknowledge the fact that these feelings are inspired by the government itself, politicians, and the frustration that nothing seems to change for the PEOPLE.. just more of the same abuse and stupidity at all levels of government)

What may be most noteworthy about the march, however, is its date -- April 19. That is the date of the first shots fired at Lexington in the Revolutionary War. And it is also the anniversary of the fiery end of the government siege in Waco and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

(Remember the Alamo, Remember Gonzales, Remember Waco!)

(Our view, our opinion....

We despise hypocrisy... left or right, liberal or conservative...

Don't tell me government run insurance is socialism... The mere existence of insurance at all IS SOCIALISM! It is merely a method to avoid personal responsibility. Not all socialism is bad for the people... city fire departments are an act of socialism.. it's a good thing. I wouldn't want to pay for the costs of a private for profit fire company! Your house is on fire and the private company wants proof of payment before they put out the fire!...

This in a nutshell is what wrong with health insurance in the USA. You're dying, you need health care, and they want proof of insurance. And the Insurance company won't insure you..... Insurance companies are mini-quasi- governments themselves. The money they pay out is NOT theirs... it's YOURS and/or your employer's. They act like the money they collect is theirs, and they spend it like it belongs to them, when they took it from YOUR paycheck or from your employer or both. It's privatized TAX, losing much of it to private greed and theft.(profit)

Don't lie to me as Reptile and LIAR Eric Cantor did and say the US is not in the business of insurance, Flood insurance is a Government insurance, Social Security is an insurance program, Medicare and Medicaid are government run insurance programs. In Texas there is a government run auto liability insurance programs that will get you insured.

Don't run for office and say you'll veto something, then 60 days later sign the damn bill into law... as LIAR Clinton did with NAFTA. Don't Burn children alive with an ATF war operation and say it was to stop child abuse.

Israel is not sacrosanct.. it deserves NONE of the US taxpayers' money. Neither does Egypt, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, or any other nation on the face of the earth, especially when the USA is falling apart. Conservatives are against welfare... but continue to keep these foreign nations on the USA welfare tit. Pure unadulterated HYPOCRISY.

As one moron on CNBC said that Massachusetts already adopted Obamacare... LIE by LIAR.. Mass adopted the Mitt Romney Mass. Health Care program.... CONGRATULATIONS MASSACHUSETTS! Obama's proposals were not even known when Mass. acted responsibly and opened health care for all.)

Don't LIE to me and promise change we can believe in, then turn around and pander to the same ignorant assholes, the Republicans, the CEOs, Wall Street gamblers, the banksters, that caused this current depression, putting millions out of work, millions losing their homes, millions now homeless, millions without health insurance, & millions going hungry.- And NO change has come for these millions that are suffering througn NO FAULT of their own.

Don't LIE to me promising change, then continue to put innocent people behind bars for victimless crimes, like growing or using marijuana, hemp, coca leaves, -- All God's natural products!!
