Under Cover At A Tea Party

Under cover at a Tea Party web site (over 75,000 active users) to see what I could discern about the "group" proved a valuable technique for a liberal, progressive Democrat wanting to form an independent opinion of these wannabe revolutionaries.

Thom Hartmann

After involvement in several discussions at this site, I was, without any notice, suspended permanently from the site. The news of my suspension was delivered in a pop-up javascript alert box, with a small text entry box for delivery of any final comments I may have for the site moderator. After noting my objections in the text box, I submitted the following information:

"I'm not surprised. I've said nothing as bad as comments which have been addressed toward me, and yet have complained to no administrators about derogatory comments pointed at me personally, rather than simply addressing my comments. I came to this site hoping to see a group of patriots. I've mostly seen a small group of complainers who apparently don't like me for my opinions. I've done nothing wrong. I'm just not very popular with some of the crowd.

Read my posts and decide for yourself. Unless you yourself are a member I have replied to. If that is the case, so be it. I can be useful elsewhere. Thank you."

Attempts to enter the site thereafter failed regardless of which browser I used (I use Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and the old dinosaur Netscape).

However, due to above average experience with server management, It was easy for me to overcome the block to the site, without using a different computer, so I registered once again under a different user name. As in the first sojourn at the site, I posed as a sincere participant in the "movement", this time a woman, hoping to gain more insight into the mentality of the people in the movement.

My second undercover trip lasted a few months, until once again I was suspended permanently. The comment which earned my suspension was posted in response to an article titled "Angle Wins `Shocker' To Challenge Reid.... The tea party flexed its considerable muscle in Nevada Tuesday night".

My response to the article:

"Sorry, but if this woman wins over Harry Reid, whom I can't stand, this nation will continue its downward spiral at an even more dizzying spin. How could any of the organizers anywhere in the Tea Party movement think Sharron Angle would make a qualified Senator who is rooted in the voice of the people, much less be able to defeat Reid? This woman is the answer to Reid's prayers - heaven sent for a sure victory."

Keeping with my undercover "status" the statement that I "can't stand Harry Reid" was a complete lie.

As many of you reading this entry might agree, my comments were not objectionable, and were in fact supported by many mainstream Republicans. But the moderator at this Tea Party site took objection, and swept me away.

Again, I posted my objections as follows:

"This is the second time you suspended me. The first time was under the name John Murphy. I've copied every article to which John Murphy had responded and to which I had responded. I'm planning to expose you.

Have fun trying to determine which other 3 screen names under which I'm still active with alternate IP addresses. I gave you a chance. That's more than you gave me. Expect to take a tumble soon."

Of course, the above comment is just bravado, as I've gotten all I need from that site, and won't be retuning soon. I've defined for myself the "essence" of the Tea Party movement based on my experiences with this group. I would like to share with all who read this entry:

"Like anyone involved in a 'movement' which is gaining traction, the Tea Party member is saturated with feelings of 'power'. This feeling of 'power' is based on pride of belonging to a 'group', NOT pride of citizenship in our country.

They are intrinsically insincere. Manipulated by Dick Army, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann and other power brokers in the Republican Party, members are used as pawns in the Republican power game - a strategy to rile up the lost and voiceless, give them a (false) sense of worth, and commandeer their votes.

Their voice is not their own - it belongs to Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Michelle Malkin, Michael Savage and other right wing hypnotists employed to put them under the spell of corporatism without for one moment realizing they are prime participants in a 'movement' which is bringing this country down."

My cousin is a prime candidate for indoctrination into this group. During the 2008 Presidential election he made it clear to me through numerous email contacts that he was enthusiastically supporting McCain / Palin. His primary reason for his choice was based on the color of Obama's skin. I did my best for several months to try to reason with my cousin.

Since the election, I haven't received even one email from my cousin.
