Just how worried investors are about the economy became clear in dramatic fashion Thursday when stocks suffered their biggest hit since early 2009 in a drop reminiscent of the financial crisis.

A key jobs report Friday could extend the losses — or help repair some of the damage.

It was a vicious day of selling that pushed the Dow Jones industrial average down 513 points, or 4.3%, to 11,384, leaving it 11.1% from its bull market peak just three months ago.

Investors were startled at how quickly the market careened out of control — especially since it had staged a strong rebound late Wednesday. "There's a time when investors take their hands off the wheel," says Chris Johnson of Johnson Research Group. "This is one of those times."
