Victory to the UEW Plant Takeover in Chicago!

Age of Reason

By Mark Vorpahl

On December 5, in Chicago, the owners of Republic Windows and Doors were set to close their doors after declaring financial ruin and abruptly laid off its 260 mostly Latino workers. Rather than passively accepting this kick in the teeth, the United Electrical Workers Union (UE) members decided to fight back, using a tactic not seen in this country since the 1930’s. They occupied the factory and have continued to do so in shifts since Friday.

And now for a decades-old story, retold ad infinitum by tens of millions of Americans, a third of whom have had to desert their country to simply find a damn way to get to work in something that won't break down:

ONE THING I am thankful for on Thanksgiving weekend is having absolutely no desire to go to the mall. Nobody opines sagely anymore that the races will never get along, calmly ladling conventional certainties over the earnest idealism of civil-rights activists. But we live in a world so permeated with militarized fear of demagogic leaders and rogue states that nuclear deterrence retains enough of the default credibility it had during the Cold War, as the opposite of utopian naïveté, that common sense is still on the defensive.

Church Is A Burden, Not A Benefit

Age of Reason

by E. Haldeman-Julius

I have no doubt that many persons -- a minority but a zealously vociferous group -- would have so little feeling of humor and anachronism as to claim that churches should be exempted from taxation because they are "houses of God." It does seem that it would be hard on a God, if any God there were, to learn a different set of manners, beliefs and tricks in each of his denominational "houses."

War Is From Mars, Love Is From Venus

Age of Reason

by Timothy Snyder

Is the United States an empire of war or an empire of love? In the early days of the Iraq war, journalists and scholars wrote of our empire of war, comparing the United States to grand historical realms of the past supposedly built on the battlefield. As our occupation of Iraq began, Robert Kagan mocked European pacifists as being from loving Venus, while manly Americans were from warlike Mars. But in Greek myth bellicose Mars played the fool, while beautiful Venus got her way.

The current global economic crisis may eventually result in the rejection of the priority usage of oil, the expert said.

Liberals

"If by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.” ~ John F. A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward.
