The Connection Between Astrology and the Bible (part 2)

Spiritual

Several bible stories are written as a series of steps that correspond to the astrological signs. The order of the steps is determined by the precession of the earth, which is clockwise around the zodiac and takes 26,000 years to complete. This cycle starts in Aquarius and ends in Pisces, and is sometimes called the great astrological year.

The personality traits (or processes) of the signs are shown below:

  1. Aquarius - planning, exploring

  2. Capricorn - structuring, manifesting

  3. Sagittarius - sharing, benefiting

  4. Scorpio - transforming, intensifying

  5. Libra - justifying, harmonizing

  6. Virgo - analyzing, ordering, condensing

  7. Leo - creating, dramatizing

  8. Cancer - digesting, nourishing

  9. Gemini - connecting, communicating

  10. Taurus - stabilizing, conserving

  11. Aries - igniting, beginning

  12. Pisces - dissolving, synthesizing

Between each step there is a division or a projection and a merging or a condensing. Previously, I posted an article showing how the story of Cain and Abel follows this pattern. The Garden of Eden story follows it as well, although not as strictly:

  1. planning: the Lord God made ... every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew
division/rising: there went up a mist from the earth
merging/falling: and watered the whole face of the ground

  2. structuring: the Lord God formed man
division: of the dust of the ground
merging: breathed into his nostrils the breath of life

An insertion is made in verse 8 and the story reverts back to the first step. (The King James version of the bible indicates insertions by using a symbol that looks like a backwards "P".)

  1. planning: the Lord God planted a garden
    division/projection: eastward in Eden
merging: there he put the man whom he had formed

  2. structuring: God made trees grow
    division: out of the ground
merging: the tree of life in the midst of the garden

  3. sharing: a river went out of Eden to water the garden
division: from thence it was parted
merging: (it) became unto four heads

  4. transforming: God put man into the garden to dress it and keep it
merging: "Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat"
division: "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it"

Starting at verse 18, there is another insertion. From here the story follows the previous pattern more loosely.

  1. planning: the Lord God planned to make a help meet for Adam

  2. structuring: the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every fowl of the air
    division: out of the ground
merging: brought them unto Adam (to be named)
division: God took one of Adam's ribs
merging: God closed up the flesh
division: God made a woman from the rib he took from Adam
merging: God brought her unto Adam
division: Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother
merging: and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh

    [Chapter 3 begins]

  3. sharing: Eve shared the forbidden fruit with Adam

  4. transforming: the eyes of Adam and Eve were (suddenly) opened

  5. justifying: When God confronted them, Adam and Eve tried to justify their disobedience (Adam said the woman gave the fruit to him, Eve said the serpent beguiled her)

  6. ordering: the serpent, the woman, and Adam were each cursed by God

the serpent was cursed above all cattle, and every beast of the field

Eve was told "thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee"

Adam was told "dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return"

The signs of Leo (step 7) and Cancer (step 8) are contained in the three curses. Leo is "dramatizing", and the curses are dramatic. Cancer is "nourishing", and there are several references to nourishing within the curses: "dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life", "in sorrow shalt thou eat of it (the ground) all thy days", "thou shalt eat the herb of the field", and "in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread".

Verses 20 and 21 could possibly represent Gemini (step 9) and Taurus (step 10).

  7. communicating: Adam called his wife's name Eve

  8. conserving: the Lord God made coats of skin, and clothed them

There is another insertion at verse 22 and these last verses seem to represent Gemini and Taurus again:

  9. communicating: God said, "Behold, the man is become as one of us..."

  10. conserving: the Lord God sent Adam forth from the garden of Eden, then placed Cherubims and a flaming sword to keep the way of the tree of life

Below are the steps of the Tower of Babel story, which does not contain the divisions and mergings of the Garden of Eden story.

  1. exploring: as they journeyed from the east, ... they found a plain in the land of Shinar

  2. structuring: they said "let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly", they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar

  3. sharing: they builded a city and a tower, the Lord came down to see it

  4. transforming: the Lord confounded their language and scattered them abroad upon the face of all the earth

These stories show that the writers of the bible were aware of the astrological ages and their characteristics. The divisions and mergings that occur between each step could be thought of as the rise and decline of each age. On a personal level, they could also be thought of as the separation of a soul from its divine source and its eventual return.
