Pastor pleads guilty to abuse

Man molested boy, 4, had child porn

By Susan Herendeen
A youth pastor at First Congregational Church in Salida recently was sentenced to three years, eight months in prison for molesting a 4-year-old boy, a prosecutor said.

Timothy Ryan Jamison, 48, of Modesto pleaded guilty to committing a lewd and lascivious act upon a child and possessing obscene material, both felonies, as his trial was about to begin April 28 in Stanislaus County Superior Court.

Once he has served his prison time, authorities will evaluate Jamison to determine if he fits the criteria for a civil commitment under a state law aimed at sexually violent predators.

Jamison also must register as a sex offender for life.

"If he ever does get parole, he will be wearing a GPS tracker," said Deputy District Attorney Annette Rees, who cited prior allegations that were not prosecuted because victims declined to testify. "I have no doubt that Jamison is a lifelong pedophile."

Modesto police began investigating in October 2007, when a woman who rented a room to Jamison told police that she found Jamison in her kitchen, fondling her young son over his clothing.

The police searched Jamison's rented room and found 12 DVDs of commercial pornography, court records said, and a search of his car yielded three photographs depicting child pornography.

A locked shed at the church on Broadway Avenue turned up more materials: 141 pornographic photos involving children, more pornography and magazines aimed at gay men, and an anal plug, according to court records.

Many of the pictures involved boys, Rees said, their ages ranging from toddler to pre-pubescent.

Pastor Laurie Wiley said Jamison locked the items in the shed the day he was arrested. They were not on the church premises for long, she said. No one at the church had any inkling that their contents were so disturbing, she said, and no children from the church were victimized by Jamison.

"I quizzed the kids, up, down and every which way, to make sure," Wiley said.

The 4-year-old victim did not attend First Congregational Church, Rees said.

If the case had gone to trial, Rees would have presented evidence of prior sex crimes by Jamison. She said several incidents were reported to police but not charged because victims would not testify.

Jamison is suspected of molesting two 16-year-old boys in 1996 and 1997, when he worked at Central Baptist Church on Sutter Avenue in Modesto.

According to court records, Jamison told one boy he would commit suicide if the young man did not consent to oral sex. The other boy met Jamison online and told authorities that the pastor had a penchant for young Asian boys.

Jamison also is suspected of molesting two boys, ages 12 and 14, during slumber parties he held in 1987 and 1988.

Rees said such "grooming" is typical behavior among pedophiles, saying Jamison used his position in the churches to gain access to children and the trust of their parents.

If Jamison had been prosecuted and convicted in the prior incidents, he would have faced a much harsher sentence.

"He basically pled guilty to everything and threw himself on the mercy of the court," Rees said. "This was as good as it would get for Jamison."
